Comments Shares I visited Starbound developer and Stardew Valley publisher Chucklefish last week to play Wargroove, its upcoming turn-based strategy game. Last time we covered this game it got an enormous response, so I thought readers might enjoy these insights on the game’s dating system, combat and influences. During the interview, the staff referred to this project as ‘Spellbound’, a working title that’s been doing the rounds for a while now, so that’s how I’ll refer to the game here. This is still very early on in development—founder and director Finn Brice says a formal announcement is “maybe quite a way off”, and suggests that it’s around a three-to-four year project in total. Chucklefish is happy to talk about the game now because its developers like being transparent about their creative process, in what’s often a bizarrely secretive industry. Wargroove is referred to as a smaller Chucklefish project, relatively speaking—six or seven people are working on it, with a release date targeted for early next year. Meanwhile, around nine or ten people are already working on Spellbound, and like Wargroove, it’s partly inspired by games from old Nintendo consoles. Before you even start talking about the gameplay and the mechanics and everything else, am I in love with this game world?

But another, much more ambitious project is in development at the moment, and its working title is Spellbound. The title is a magical school life simulator, inspired both by Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley. Brice talked a bit about Spellbound’s future in an interview with PCGamer. How do I achieve that? How do I put together a game world that really hits home, [that] I just want to spend my time in? There’s a huge emphasis on worldbuilding in Spellbound, too, with both an enormous magical world to explore as well as an “entire cast of characters” with their own unique personalities to meet.
But Brice isn’t trying to create a high fantasy story, or one with an overarching major villain to fight, like Harry Potter. Spellbound is more of a fantastical slice-of-life simulator. For that reason, dating will be much harder in Spellbound than in Stardew Valley. Expect some awkward and embarrassing moments to play out.
So get ready to experience those traumatic teenage years all over again. You might get a few hard knocks. So don’t expect an immediate release date in the near future. But for now, Stardew Valley is headed to Nintendo Switch later this month, meaning there’s plenty of time to spend in one of Chucklefish’s most iconic game worlds before Spellbound hits.

Life is slow in Stardew Valley, and while the game encourages players to go at their own pace as they grow crops and meet the locals, there’s definitely a few gameplay benefits from adding mods. The NPC Map Locations mod lets players not just track where villagers are located across town, it also lets players filter out certain villagers.
That way, if a player wants to track a specific NPC love interest in order to maintain their friendship level, players can use the mod to quickly run over and chat. Luckily, Simple Crop Label lets players keep tabs on their produce and make sure they’re tending to the right plants. By hovering their cursor over a crop and pressing the right mouse button, this mod gives players a given crop’s name. It’s a pretty straightforward mod, but it’s also incredibly helpful for farmers that are just figuring out Stardew Valley’s gameplay.
